Today’s Date in American History
1793- The first cornerstone of the Capital Building is laid by George Washington. You probably didn’t even know that Washington laid that cornerstone before reading this, did you? But you’re not surprised at all, are you? That’s right. We didn’t think so.
1837- Tiffany & Company is founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany, marking a pinnacle moment for Romantic Comedies as well as New Yorkers who expect their loved ones to spend way too much money on jewlery.
1851- The first publication of the New York Daily-Times was issued. You might know it as “The New York Times” or maybe “that newspaper that your prickish neighbor always reads on the train.”
1870- The Old Faithful Geyser is observed and named. They went with Old Faithful because the obvious name choice of “Don’t get too close to this or your face will get burned the fuck off” had already been taken.
1960- Fidel Castro arrives in New York City as head of the Cuban delegation to the United Nations, where he is immediately served a suspicious looking entree of a boiled shoe with syringes marked “poison” sticking out of it.
